The Huajiang Science Lab, envisioned by designers Daisuke Nagatomo and Minnie Jan, is a classroom renovation project that transcends traditional educational spaces. It's an embodiment of a modern pedagogical philosophy where the design itself becomes an integral part of the learning process. The lab is divided into a primary teaching area and an exploration zone, fostering a dynamic educational experience.
Symbolizing the centripetal force of learning, the lab's curved ceiling draws inspiration from the vastness of the universe and the natural curiosity about the world. This architectural element not only serves an aesthetic purpose but also aligns with the educational mission of the space—encouraging students to look beyond the horizon and aspire to greater heights of knowledge.
Functionality is at the core of the Huajiang Science Lab's design. The teacher's desk is strategically placed for optimal supervision, while a dedicated handwashing station streamlines the practical aspects of scientific experimentation. The U-shaped student desks, oriented towards the teacher and a central touchscreen, facilitate an interactive learning environment where instruction and experimentation go hand in hand.
Realized through skilled wood carpentry and meticulous on-site painting, the lab spans 108 square meters of thoughtfully designed space. It's a place where young minds are nurtured, and the seeds of scientific inquiry are sown. The design team, including Hao Sung, has successfully merged functionality with aesthetic appeal, creating a classroom that is both a learning facility and a work of art.
The lab's design is not just about the physical space; it's about the emotional and intellectual journey of the students. The challenge was to create a seamless connection between the main classroom and the adjacent small library. A semi-circular opening serves as a gateway to knowledge, with careful consideration given to color and material to influence the students' emotional states positively.
Recognized for its excellence with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2024, the Huajiang Science Lab is a shining example of how design can revolutionize educational spaces. It stands as a beacon of innovation, showcasing how a well-designed environment can inspire and facilitate the educational journey of future generations.
